In this wonderful sermon, Jesus continues to declare to us the true nature of citizens of the kingdom of God. In our previous passages, He cautions us against hypocrisy and lays out a right heart attitude that leads to good rewards. Now He turns our attention toward what we treasure, what we hold dear, what we value. Jesus starkly lays out the kingdom ethic. “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 5:21). A life that treasures the things of this world and puts them first is a life lived in darkness in service of idols. As awful as that darkness and service of idols is, we are still tempted by it every day. Jesus stops us in our sin and calls us to repent of our evil ways. The call is to daily, even minute by minute, reorient our hearts and our eyes towards truly serving our God. Please pray that your heart would be softened, to be convicted by Christ’s words, and repent.
